EARS HAVE EYES is a monthly sound art radio program airing on CJSW 90.9 FM in Calgary/Mohkinstsis, Golden Co-op Radio in Golden, BC, and NAISA Radio in South River, Ontario. You can listen to podcasts of previous episodes here.

For our June & July episodes, we’re turning our eyes (and ears) skyward for an exploration of atmospheric sounds, ambient music, and cloudy noises. Whether capturing the sound of Earth’s magnetosphere, field recording our feathered friends, or exploring the shape of clouds through monthly “Cloud Sculptures,” these artists are reinterpreting clouds (and all things above) through sound.

Thanks to the participating artists and our friends at CJSW, NAISA, and Golden Co-op Radio!

Christina Milinusic & Trond Trondsen

Trond Trondsen is a Calgary-based film producer, cinematographer, and modular synth enthusiast with a PhD in Cosmic Geophysics. He is co-founder of the Eureka! Masters of Cinema Series, widely regarded as the European counterpart to the Criterion Collection, and serves as President of Keo Scientific Ltd., specializing in optical instrumentation for geospace research.

Christina Milinusic is a Western Canada-based sound artist, thereminist, arts-based researcher, and professional AV technician whose work explores immersive listening through field recordings, synthesis, and experimental performance.

Cirrus Murmuration is an ethereal piece of ambient music that weaves together the haunting, otherworldly tones of the theremin with the textured soundscapes of a modular synthesizer. Together, they create an immersive, meditative soundscape that feels both celestial and grounded, inviting listeners to lose themselves in its gentle, ever-shifting currents.

emceekee

Andrew McKee – aka emceekee – is an audiovisual artist making additional noises and eye crack for installation, performance, and dissemination throughout Europe and online for twenty-five years.

About flysouth4winter:

“Composition inspired by and based upon a recording of a gaggle of geese taking off from a field to fly south for winter. Original recording made in November 2001 in rural Perthshire, Scotland.”

HY Kwan 關栩溢

HY Kwan (關栩溢) is the founder of 433 Records, a Hong Kong-based label that “explores how music is defined, redefined, encoded, decoded, deconstructed, reconstructed, experienced, and experimented with.” He is also a sound artist, lyricist, and music critic working under various monikers. His works have been released on numerous labels, including 433 Records (HK), Unexplained Sounds Group (Italy), and Noise a Noise (Berlin), among others.

About Cloud Sculpture (Cirrocumulus, Jan 2025):

“In December 2024, while traveling with his mobile phone out of battery, HY Kwan found himself with nothing to do but gaze out of the bus window. Captivated by the carefree and random nature of clouds in the sky, he became convinced that every cloud carries its own history and lineage, each possessing unique emotions and beauty. Motivated to capture this beauty and sentiment, the “Cloud Sculpture” project was born. Beginning in 2025, each month HY Kwan dedicates a specific time to sit and observe the sky, either in a fixed location or while commuting. From his observations, he selects a particular cloud or group of clouds to inspire a “sound sculpture.” The goal is to use sound as a medium to convey the essence of the chosen cloud(s). Each sculpture is created in a single take—without rehearsals, revisions, or mastering—reflecting the untamed, raw, and spontaneous nature of clouds. New sculpture tracks are released monthly. By the end of 2025, the album will evolve into a mini cloud museum, showcasing twelve unique clouds captured and celebrated throughout the year..”

Nicola Fumo Frattegiani

Nicola Fumo Frattegiani is an electroacoustic and audio-visual composer living in Perugia, Italy. His works have been presented at various national and international festivals, among the most important and prestigious of electroacoustic music and experimental arts.

Author and performer, his research deals with electroacoustic music, sound for images, video, art exhibitions and compositions for theatrical performances.

About Inside the River:

“The soundscape composition “Underwater” narrates the sky with ears immersed in water. What does the sky sound like or might it sound like while being underwater? The composition was created using exclusively recordings made with a hydrophone in the waters of the Tiber River in Umbria, Italy. These recordings are present both original and manipulated. The structure of the composition is a slow crescendo in which the natural sounds are slowly disintegrated and destructured until they are devoured and overwhelmed by a distorted mass. The beginning and end of the piece coincide, natural life and human action are shown to be enclosed within a cycle: they are born and die together.

Dr. Shane Byrne

Dr. Shane Byrne is a composer and educator working in the field of creative media. His areas of interest include audio-visual composition, spatial audio, human-computer interaction, and acoustic ecology. He is currently the program lead on the BSc (Hons) in Music and Sound Engineering at TUS Midlands where he lectures in Electroacoustic Composition, Interactive Audio, Audiovisual Composition, Visual Creation, and Audio Electronics.

About VLF Cliff Walk:

“VLFs, the natural radio emissions of the Earth’s magnetosphere, though my understanding of the underlying physics is still developing. These emissions occur in the VLF band (3–30 kHz) and are generated by electromagnetic activity from lightning, aurorae, and solar flares interacting with the ionosphere. My recordings captured three main types of lightning-related VLF signals: sferics, which sound like crackling fire and can travel vast distances by bouncing between the ground and ionosphere; tweeks, which resemble bird chirps and exhibit frequency dispersion due to long-distance travel; and whistlers, heard at 1:42 and 2:40, which produce a distinctive whistle due to even greater dispersion. The recording also contains man-made interference, including the pervasive 50Hz hum from mains electricity, which I had to filter out despite being 500 meters from the nearest power line.

Sylvain Souklaye

Sylvain Souklaye is a French Caribbean Brooklyn-based live artist, sonic maker and author whose work explores interiority, broken bodies, environmental urgencies and political retribution through the lens of his Martinican Neg marron heritage and Lyon’s Canut revolt history. Beginning with DIY social justice activism he called “vandalism,” Souklaye evolved his practice through action poetry, radio work, and sonic experimentation to create uniquely lyrical and gut-wrenching live experiences that blur the line between performer and audience. His notable works include performances at prestigious venues like Judson Church and the Momentary, recognition in Aesthetica Art Prize’s top 100 Contemporary Artists, and current fellowships with organizations including Harvestworks and the International Contemporary Ensemble.

About THERE:

“INSTANT + INSTINCT + ABSENCE is the junction between an inner battle and an environmental one. I composed the piece under a blue sky and fancy clouds in Brooklyn, but I can only think about the political tipping point where we all are. INSTANT + INSTINCT + ABSENCE is a place and moment where poetic wandering meets visceral politics.”

Tom Scott

Tom Scott works with film, video and sound (field recordings) creating installations, film, video and audio works, individually and in collaborations. He has contributed to Artists collectives and taught multimedia. These days he make things for the enjoyment.

About Storm:

“This work is comprised of rain drops, wind, and movement, all of which describes the dynamics of the storm, in this case the first two hours. Upon reflection of the sound work, considering that the night was stormy, loud and invigorating the final recording comes across as quite a reflective sound, which incorporates moments of evolving sonic excitement, dense with anticipation. Location Thames Estuary UK.

Early in 2024 one of the last storms of the winter was recorded overnight, resulting in ten hours of material. The material was divided into two hour segments for editing and for this submission a 15 minute extract was created from the first 2 hours. Eventually there will be a ten hour work.

Victoria Lundy

Victoria Lundy makes theremin-centered electronic music in Denver, Colorado. She plays as a solo artist as well as with the Carbon Dioxide Ensemble, and collaborates with other artists.

Nitrogen Narcosis was created for the 2025 Rocky Mountain Synthesizer Meet Drone Day Live Stream Multimedia Concert.
