SONIC SPLASH:
sound swim & summer pool party!
In late August, we collaborated with EMMEDIA to throw a rare summertime Hibernation Project event. A combination of spacey music, performance art aquasize, pizza, and all-ages fun, our celebration of sound and summer took over Stanley Park Pool for an evening of excellent watery weirdness.

Janira Moncayo and Caitlind Brown introduced the event, handing it over to Desiree Nault who led performance art “aquasize” using a series of prompts to invite pool party participants to move through the water in unexplored ways.

The event was partly inspired by Marine Life, the new album by Wayne Patrick Garrett. Wayne played a watery soundtrack for SONIC SPLASH, accompanied by his friends/band, Keith Rodger and Patrick Hamilton.

During one section of the Pool Party, participants were invited to float and listen, letting the sound wash over and through them as their bodies became weightless.

During another, the pool was filled with balloons, hand-written with sea creatures and ocean concepts! Each person was intended to grab a balloon and impersonate the creature through dance/movement.

This soon degraded into excellent chaos, with balloons flying everywhere like water volley-balls…!

The show ended with the entire band throwing down their instruments and jumping into the pool!

Thanks to Desiree Nault for leading performance art games and designing the most joyful water-based movement prompts, thanks to the band (Wayne Garrett, Keith Rodger, and Patrick Hamilton) playing “Marine Life,” thanks to our awesome volunteers for all the help, thanks to Joe for being head of the pizza crew, and giant thanks to Janira from EMMEDIA for being the best collaborator!
